The problem isn’t loving yourself too much. It’s loving yourself so much that you never stop to question yourself.

Synopsis

Some people screw up and then congratulate themselves on how they handled it

This book isn’t about people who make mistakes. For that, I’d have to start with myself and we’d need quite a few more chapters. It’s about the people who do damage, rearrange the story, come up with a beautiful explanation and end up convinced that the problem was you.

The one who lies and then complains because you didn’t trust them. The one who doesn’t keep their word and explains that your expectations are simply too high. The one who treats you like shit and, when you finally get pissed off, is deeply concerned about your inability to manage your emotions.

There are people with self-love. And then there’s self-esteem without an audit: loving yourself enormously without ever checking the books.

Gente de mierda con excelente autoestima is satire, social observation and dark humor. It doesn’t diagnose. It looks at behavior. What someone did. How they reacted when you pointed it out. Whether they acknowledged anything. Whether they changed. Whether every argument ends exactly the same way.

Because understanding someone doesn’t mean you have to put up with them

For years I was very good at finding explanations for people who, meanwhile, weren’t looking for a single one for me. I understood wounds, fears, family histories, past relationships and even bad days.

All of that can explain a behavior.

What I no longer buy is that the explanation erases the fact.

Having empathy is one thing. Turning yourself into the rehab center for someone who won’t even admit they have something to look at is something very different.

This isn’t a diagnostic manual

You don’t need to play psychologist to recognize that someone lies, manipulates, breaks their word, humiliates or repeats the same pattern every time you ask them to take responsibility.

It isn’t an altar for always being right either

Chapter 15 exists for a reason: I Was Also a Piece of Shit… with Excellent Self-Esteem. Pointing things out helps. Taking a look at yourself helps more.

The Central Idea

Self-esteem without an audit

It’s the person who loves themselves enormously but never checks what they put into the problem. The ex was crazy. The friend was jealous. The family was toxic. The boss was afraid of their potential. The coworkers couldn’t stand their brilliance.

You hear five different stories until you start to notice there’s one character who shows up in all of them.

That character, oddly enough, never suspects a thing.

Fifteen chapters, an epilogue and a dictionary that will probably sound way too familiar

  • The Art of Screwing Up and Applauding Yourself
  • The Neighborhood Narcissist: A King’s Ego, a Pawn’s Life
  • The Ones Who Hurt You and Then Ask You to Understand Their Process
  • My Ex: A Misunderstood Genius (According to Him)
  • The “Friends” Who Love You... When It Suits Them
  • The Mediocre Boss Who Thinks He’s a Visionary
  • The Internet Know-It-All: Expert in Everything, Trained in Nothing
  • The One Who Needs to Fix Your Life So He Doesn’t Have to Look at His Own
  • The Love Expert Who Never Follows His Own Advice
  • The Abundance Influencer Who Lives in Debt
  • The Ones Who Watch You Work and Have Already Done the Math with Your Money
  • The Ones Who Confuse Rudeness with Authenticity
  • The “Good Person” Who Is Only Good When There Are Witnesses
  • The Spiritual Toxics: Cardboard Enlightened Ones
  • I Was Also a Piece of Shit… with Excellent Self-Esteem
  • Then comes the epilogue, May Life Make Them Pay in Style, and a Dictionary of Pieces of Shit with Excellent Self-Esteem. There’s no exam at the end. Thank God.

For anyone who’s tired of justifying the unjustifiable

This book is for you if… you ever went in to call out a lie and came out questioning your own personality; if you explained the same thing five times; if you confused understanding with putting up with it; or if you discovered too late that an apology with a “but you did it too” wasn’t exactly an apology.

And also if… you want to learn to go back to the facts before falling in love with the explanation, to set boundaries without diagnosing anyone, and to recognize when you’re facing a human mistake and when you’re facing a pattern.

Introduction

Some people just rub you the wrong way, and that’s that. There’s no mystery, childhood trauma or psychological explanation to look for. Sometimes two people simply can’t stand each other, and that’s part of life too.

I know perfectly well that I’m not easy for everyone. I have a temper, I ask questions when something doesn’t add up, I don’t like being taken for an idiot, and at this stage of my life I’ve almost completely lost the ability to smile while someone is telling me something stupid.

I’m not going to write this book playing the universal victim who had the misfortune of running into every bad person while I went around handing out flowers and good feelings.

No.

I’ve screwed up too.

And that’s exactly where the difference begins: not in making mistakes, but in what we do when we finally realize it.

About the Author

Yenny Astrid Londoño

She writes about people, relationships, contradictions, loss, boundaries and all those things humanity insists on complicating even when they were pretty simple.

She doesn’t write from the moral high ground of someone who has already figured out how the world works. She writes from something less elegant and a lot more useful: she’s been there too, she’s made excuses too, she’s kept insisting too, she’s picked the wrong person too, and she’s also had an impressive amount of confidence while being completely wrong.
